Some of the most important technologies we enjoy today—including the ability to
- electronically record pictures and sound for commercial and personal use
- store large amounts of data needed in virtually all computing applications
- capture and electronically encode information critical to scientific, military and other research uses
were pioneered by Ampex Corporation, Redwood City, California
And some of the legendary founders of leading technology companies that followed into the next generation:
- Ray Dolby, Dolby Labs
- Larry Elllison, Oracle
- Nolan Bushnell, Atari
began their careers, and developed their talents when employees at Ampex Corporation
The Ampex Corporation is part of the “root-stock” of Silicon Valley. Other companies that started in Silicon Valley at the same time as Ampex and were growing at the same rate through the 40s, 50s and 60s—such as Hewlett-Packard and Dalmo-Victor—continue to compete effectively in their industries. Unfortunately, the Ampex Corporation could not maintain its success and leadership role in the technologies it developed. Today the company is much smaller than it was and its excellent products serve a much smaller market.
The public’s awareness of Ampex Corporation has diminished over the years. But its importance to the history of electronics technology remains.
This site is dedicated to the legacy of Ampex Corporation and the Ampex people who made lasting and important contributions that led to the way we communicate, educate, conduct scientific research, and produce and enjoy entertainment today.
We welcome contributions and comments from readers, especially if you are familiar with the history of this company and the continuing importance of the breakthrough work it did, and the talented people who began their remarkable careers at Ampex.
